The farmer's cottage had been abandoned for years, used by drifters and people experiencing homelessness until a hurricane blew through the area, collapsed the roof, and tore off the side. I kept hearing the line from the poem Ozymandias as I drove by the place.
"My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
by Percy Bysshe Shelley - 1826
I thought it would be appropriate to photograph the galactic core above the abandoned cottage. The house is completely gone now, bulldozed away. However, the Milky Way still rises and falls as the Earth turns.
I almost feel our tiny world drifting through the "great enveloping cosmic dark." For me, there is no more humbling experience. I want to remind the viewer how small humankind is in my landscape work. How important that we try to be kinder to each other and to our world. We are just a collection of stories at the end; we only need to make them good ones.
